Bench Boost and Triple Captain: choosing the timing

The Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips amplify a single gameweek. Their real value depends on timing and preparation, not on playing them whenever a gameweek looks good.

Last updated:

How the two chips work

  • Bench Boost: the points of your four bench players count alongside your starting XI for that gameweek.
  • Triple Captain: your captain scores triple points instead of double.

You can't play more than one chip in the same gameweek. The number of chips and when they are available is set by each season's official rules, so check the current rules before planning.

Bench Boost: preparation matters more than activation

The usual problem is that benches are built from cheap players with few minutes, so they score little even when the chip is active. A Bench Boost therefore needs preparation weeks in advance:

  • Make your bench players regular starters for their clubs.
  • Make sure all fifteen players have a match that gameweek, and ideally some have two in a double gameweek.
  • Check bench injuries before the deadline; an injured bench player wastes a large part of the chip.

Many managers pair the Bench Boost with a Wildcard or banked transfers to have a full, ready squad before the target gameweek. See the Wildcard guide.

Triple Captain: pick the player and the fixture together

Triple Captain amplifies your captaincy decision, so the same criteria apply, only more strongly:

  • Near-certain minutes: any doubt about playing time cuts the chip's value sharply.
  • A good fixture, or two: a player with two matches in a double gameweek has two chances to score.
  • Several routes to points: attacking involvement and penalty duties raise the chance of a big haul.

For comparing candidates in detail, see the captain selection guide.

Why these chips are linked to double gameweeks

In a double gameweek some teams play twice, so their players get two chances to score instead of one. That's why many managers save these chips for those gameweeks. But double gameweeks aren't always known far in advance, and a chip's window may close before one appears, so follow fixture announcements and the season's rules.

Common mistakes

  • Playing a chip in an ordinary gameweek out of boredom or after a run of bad results.
  • Playing the Bench Boost with a weak bench or an injured bench player.
  • Triple-captaining a player whose minutes are in doubt before the news is out.
  • Forgetting that chips may be tied to specific parts of the season.

Checklist before playing a chip

  1. Have you checked this season's chip rules and availability?
  2. Bench Boost: do all fifteen players have a match, and are they all fit?
  3. Triple Captain: are the player's minutes close to certain?
  4. Is this gameweek better than the upcoming ones you know about?
  5. Have you waited for the latest news before the deadline?
