Reading fixture difficulty (FDR) and its limits

The fixture difficulty rating is one of the most used tools for planning transfers. Knowing what it measures, and what it doesn't, helps you use it well instead of relying on it alone.

Last updated:

What is the fixture difficulty rating?

Fantasy Premier League rates how hard each match is for each team, on a scale from 1 (easiest) to 5 (hardest). Every match has two ratings, one for the home side and one for the away side, because a fixture isn't equally hard for both.

The idea is simple: players from teams facing weaker opponents have a better chance of scoring points, through goals or clean sheets.

How to use it when planning

Look at a run of fixtures, not a single match

The rating is most useful across the next four to six gameweeks. A team with a run of easy fixtures may be worth investing in; one easy match between hard ones rarely justifies a transfer.

Compare options, not absolutes

When choosing between players with similar prices and roles, fixture difficulty can be a useful tiebreaker.

Plan rotation between two goalkeepers or defenders

Some managers pick cheap players from two teams whose easy fixtures alternate, then start whichever has the easier match each week.

Its limits: when not to rely on it

  • It doesn't move quickly with form: a team at its best or worst may not have that reflected in its rating straight away.
  • One number for attack and defence: a side that is strong in attack but weak at the back is a different opponent for a forward than for a defender, and the rating doesn't separate the two.
  • It doesn't know about absences: a key opponent missing through injury can change a fixture more than the number suggests.
  • Individual quality sometimes matters more: a top player can score against anyone, and an easy fixture doesn't make a player with unreliable minutes a good pick.

What to combine it with

Use fixture difficulty together with other factors, including:

  • The player's expected minutes and role in the team.
  • Both teams' recent performances, not just results.
  • Injury and suspension news on both sides.
  • The team's other fixtures, such as European matches, that may lead to rotation.

A general example

Say you are comparing two similarly priced midfielders. The first faces two easy-rated opponents followed by three hard ones; the second has five medium fixtures. If you plan to sell after two gameweeks, the first may suit you better. If you want a player to keep for longer, the second may be steadier. Here the rating helps you ask the right question: how many gameweeks do I want this player for?

How the tool helps

The dashboard shows each player's upcoming fixtures in its comparison tables, and the Fixtures page lists every gameweek's matches. Use them with the transfer strategy guide to decide when a move is worth it.
