Differentials: when to take a risk and when to play safe

A differential is a player owned by few managers. If he performs, you gain on everyone who doesn't own him. But an unplanned risk can cost you more than it earns.

Last updated:

What is a differential?

Ownership is the share of managers who have a player in their team. A highly owned player scores for most of your rivals too, so he barely moves your rank. A low-owned player's points set you apart.

There is no official cut-off for what counts as a differential. What matters most is how many of your actual mini-league rivals own the player, not just overall ownership.

When is the risk worth it?

  • When you need to close a gap: if you are behind in your league, picking the same players as your rivals won't shrink the gap.
  • When the player has a real reason: a new role, a more attacking position, or a good run of fixtures few people have noticed.
  • In positions where everyone looks the same: if most managers own the same forwards, a different midfielder may be the easiest way to stand out.

When to play safe

  • When you are leading your league: owning the popular players protects your lead.
  • With the highest-impact players: leaving out a player everyone owns who scores heavily and consistently is a big risk.
  • When a player's low ownership has a clear reason: such as doubts about his minutes or a recent injury.
Low ownership isn't an advantage in itself. A good differential is a good player first, and lightly owned second.

How to pick a differential with a plan

  1. Check expected minutes and role, as you would for any player.
  2. Look at underlying performance, such as attacking involvement and chances created, not just one gameweek's points.
  3. Review upcoming fixtures, and read the fixture difficulty guide.
  4. Decide how many gameweeks you plan to keep him, and what happens if it doesn't work.
  5. Balance the number of risks in your squad; too many differentials make your score swing more.

The differential captain

Differentials have the biggest effect on captaincy, because captain points are doubled. A successful differential captain can move your rank a lot, and a failed one can cost you heavily against managers who chose the popular captain. Decide based on your league position, and see the captain selection guide.

Quick checklist

  1. Is the player good regardless of his ownership?
  2. Are his minutes regular and his role clear?
  3. Does your league position call for a risk?
  4. How many differentials are already in your squad?

How the tool helps

The Differentials section of the dashboard lists low-owned players with form, price and upcoming fixtures, and My Leagues helps you compare your squad with your rivals'. Use them to decide where to take risks; the final decision is yours.
